History as told by the late Sister Dolphine Williams Bradley, founding member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and updated by her son, Deacon Nathan Williams.
We are about to travel down memory lane, as I remember it from the age of five years through recent years. The Shiloh Baptist Church was organized in 1919; I was told by my grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Perry who was among the organizers of The Shiloh Baptist Church with the late Reverend Edward E. Rogers, a Tuskegee Institute graduate.
The Church was wired during the illness of the Rev. Rogers by our acting pastor, Reverend Charlie Blount. Later on for a short time the Reverend A.B. Williams served as the shepherd of the flock. In 1935 the church building was remodeled under the administration of the late Reverend B.F. Odem. The Church was again remodeled in September 1940 under the administration of our late pastor, the Reverend C.H. Moore. We have come a long, long way. We began in a one room house with a kerosene lamp for our vision.
Our first location was Clopton Street. The site was where the Empire Rouse Laundry is located. Down among the pear trees was an old well, beautiful garden of vegetables and weather beaten one room house which was used as the church and school. But we had a happy little bunch. There were no instruments to play the sweet songs, but when we would blend our voices, a mighty sweet music we would make. Some laughed at us but we still kept the faith. It was not only a school it was really a small instituion of learning led by our pastor and teacher Reverend Rogers. Reverend Rogers taught us a little of everything. He taught us many things which have been very beneficial throughout life. He instructed us in the Bible, the key that unlocks every door. He taught fundamentals of reading , writing and arithmetic. After Pastor Rogers left, we moved to Pelham Street under the leadership of these other great men of God. We were situated on one of the most beautiful hills in Montgomery. The lawn was decorated with one of God’s finest decorations; a magnificent oak tree with long draping bunches of green in summer and brown in winter.
When we turnback the pages of time you can see we have something to be thankful for.we are still climbing with God as our captain. As some of you know, with this faithful army we have traveled through hard trials and tribulations. Then one day God saw fit to send us our beloved general, the Reverend A.H. Hoffman, to lead this army through this great battle. He came right in, put on his armor of faith and his fighting shoes. With God in front the stage was set. Reverend Hoffman raised up the ladder and we started climbing all over again with this God sent organizer. There has been so much added to the Church. The army of God is larger.
In 1958, God blessed us with a beautiful edifice to sing His praises in. With our faithful company and other Christian friends and this young Moses, God sent us leading the way, that new church was built. We continued in prayer, fighting, crying and paying and we conquered. In 1965, the Lord blessed us to feast and burn the mortgage on the grounds of the new Church. What a happy day it was. But we didn’t stop there, we continued in prayer and faith, climbing up the ladder with God and our pastor in front. In 1982, we were blessed again to add a new fellowship hall.
As you know time brings on changes and God saw fit for change because of the illness of Dr. A.H. Hoffman in 1991. God sent us another young general to take over the army of faith, the Reverend Juan D. McFarland. He is a christian gentleman and a dynamic speaker and born leader. As we can see, there are improvements in the church. God has used this talented young general to bring more soldiers to this army of faith. Reverend McFarland loved this army and we loved him.
In the years since my late mother shared her remembrances of Shiloh , this church family has continued to grow by God’s grace and under the leadership of our pastor, trustees, deacons and deaconess.
In 2001, the Church purchased three fifteen passenger vans and started the Shiloh Transportation Service and we also purchased an additional lot adjacent to the Church. In 2002, we began a Senior citizens program called “Seniors Alive Program”(SAP) and in 2003 under Pastor McFarland’s leadership, we started the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Christian Child Care Center. In 2006, another parcel of land adjacent to the Church was purchased.
Since our last anniversary celebration Shiloh has experienced an abundance of God’s blessings which always accompany moments of great trial and great blessings. On October 5, 2014 Reverend Juan McFarland’s pastorate of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church came to an end. The Reverend Arthur Greene served ably as interim pastor. After a prayerful and deliberate search during which nearly one hundred ministers applied, Reverend Taraus Fuller of New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida was elected pastor on October 8, 2015. Pastor Fuller began his service to Shiloh on December 27, 2015. We remain grateful to Almighty God for His grace and His mercy in this our 100thyear of service. May the lord continue to prosper the work of all our hands. Februray of 2024, Pastor Fuller left the church and Interium Pastor was appointed Rev. Dr. Edward Hodge Jr.
